CIYC Members Place in Block Island Race
City Island Yacht Club is proud to announce that in keeping with the club’s storied racing tradition, two members and their crews successfully competed in the prestigious, 168 nautical mile, 2024 Block Island Race, sponsored by the Storm Trysail Club.
We congratulate both Steven Landy and the Sanguine crew, as well as Todd Aven and the Thin Man crew, who placed first and second in their respective divisions!
Girl Scouts help Garden Club of City Island Beautify CIYC
Earlier this month, on May 4th, the Garden Club of City Island and Girl Scout Troops #1095 and #1096 planted flowers in CIYC’s flower beds and containers.
Garden Club members, Joan Higgins, Carol Hansen, Judy Judson and Carmela Bellocchio were there with troop leader Mirella Vargas to provide instruction and equipment.
The Girl Scouts planted herbs in the containers near the kitchen entrance, additional perennials on the path to the front door, and native plants under the west porch. They then put down an organic compost/mulch combination, to create a finished look. The girls all worked hard and were pleased with the results. This is not their first time to garden at CIYC and we all look forward to continued help from the two organizations in the future.
The native plants should survive the hot summer sun on the west side and Garden Club members, Joan Higgins and Lorraine Nicoletti, will be watering these beds regularly as they have for several years. Please say hello to them when you see them and offer thanks for helping to beautify the CIYC grounds.
Sunday JAM Race Dates Announced
The City Island Yacht Club cordially invites all cruisers, day sailors, and racers alike, to come out for a series of relaxed Sunday jib and main races. The races will be short, approximately one hour, and the courses will be triangles. No windward–leeward courses and no spinnakers. Also, no poling out jibs or genoas with spinnaker poles or whisker poles. Non-racers and racers are encouraged to bring family members, sailors, and non-sailors.
DATES: June 9, June 30, August 4, August 18, September 1
LOCATION: Approx 1/2 mile north-northwest of buoy 46A
START TIME: 4:00 p.m.
There will be a long start line with plenty of room for everyone to start. The start line will be between a white mark and the yellow flag on the Race Committee boat. You will not be able to miss it. The committee boat will monitor VHF channel 71. Results will be announced on the CIYC porch after the race.
Boats will be scored PHRF, time on distance, and racing boats will be scored separately from cruising boats. If you don’t have a PHRF certificate, we’ll figure out what your rating should be. There is no entry fee. If there is a NOAA small craft advisory in effect as of 10:00 a.m. on the day of the race, the race will not be held.
If you want to come out, contact Jim Dennis at or 914-714-2195. We will send you a course sheet, instructions, and answer any questions. Instructions and course sheets will also be available the day of the race from the committee boat.

The EDLU Race was first sailed in 1956. It has long been a classic tune-up race for the around Block Island Race and Block Island Race Week.
May 8 at 7:30 – 9:00 PM: Join us at a informative seminar to learn how to optimize the trim of your sails for a comfortable and safe voyage. The Cruising Committee of the City Island Yacht Club is pleased to present a seminar by CIYC member DallasMurphy on “Sail Trim for Cruisers”.

The Membership and Communications Committees are proud to announce an unprecedented number of new members joining City Island Yacht Club in 2024. After dedicated and coordinated efforts, including multiple Open Houses and an online awareness campaign, new sailors at all membership levels are joining our community. To help with onboarding, CIYC is launching a new Club Mentor Program to ensure each new member is welcomed and gets to know our unique sailing community with ease.
Current members are needed to pair with the new members of similar membership level to provide a friendly point of contact for the new member and be available to answer questions or guide the new member in getting to know the Club and become more involved.
The expectation of a Club Mentor is to call the new member, once paired, and welcome them to the Club, offering to “show them the ropes.” Mentors are encouraged to share contact details in case the new member has a question in the future. If schedules align, a quick, in-person meet-up at the Club would be fantastic, but is not required.
The program is not meant to provide mentorship on sailing, but rather is meant to help new members get to know current members of our community faster, acclimate to the Club to get the most out of membership and build our growing community of sailing enthusiasts.
If you’re interested in being paired with a new member as their “Club Mentor,” please email Matt McDonough at . Please provide your name, contact information, and current membership type.
Thank you for your support.
The Galley Tavern is holding its Grand Opening on Saturday, May 4th and Sunday, May 5th from 3 – 6pm. Come celebrate and help welcome our new stewards at CIYC.
