Learn the essentials of safe coastal and inland navigation using basic GPS in conjunction with charts and other marine data.
The Cruising Committee of City Island Yacht Club is pleased to sponsor a course in Marine Navigation. Taught by instructors from America’s Boating Club (formerly the U.S. Power Squadron), the course will cover the essentials of safe coastal and inland navigation using electronic tools as well as hardcopy charts.
First Class Day/Time: Saturday, Jan. 13, 10am – 2pm
Subsequent Dates: Saturdays, Jan. 20th – March 16th*
Where: City Island Yacht Club, board of directors meeting room
Cost: $140, includes class materials
*Registrants will decide after first class to attend subsequent classes on either a 5-week schedule (4 hour sessions) or maintain the 10-week schedule (2 hour sessions).
Skills covered include how to:
- Interpret and use electronic and paper charts
- Plot courses
- Recognize landmarks and navigation aids
- Use a GPS
- Convert between true and magnetic compass bearings
- Pre-plan courses
- Monitor progress and determine your position
- Check you’re on course
